Tips & Tricks: Unique Use of a Red Lipstick

We all have struggled to find our perfect Red Lipstick isn't it? If you have found it, then congratulations but if you haven't then fear not, you will find it one day :) Nowin this quest of finding our perfect Reds we have by now for sure collected a few many Red lipsticks that seem to be of no use to us now right?
So what do we do with them?

Yup, for one we could use them as a blush can't we... That's a no-brainer right? How about I tell you another use of a discarded Red lippy?

Truth be told, the trick that I am gonna share with you guys is not something that I thought of. It was discovered/invented by my little cousin sister and the effect that it has on one's look is just fabulous! Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Vijeta, my baby cousin who actually came up with and demonstrated to me this awesome technique...

What she does is, she dots the bridge of her nose and her inner-cheek with her red lippy and blends it all outwards. This gives her a natural looking perpetual blush that seems to be coming from within :)

Take a look...

I tried it and it looks superb on me too :) Here's a pic...
Forgive the oily face :P

Analysis
This look would be apt when you really want to look like you have no makeup on and show a bit of red-ness. It gives an illusion of innocence, delicate skin and a very fair complexion.
But do be wary that this trick would work only on fair and medium skintones. On dark skins it might just look like a rash... One has to understand that this trick is to create an illusion of fair and delicate skin.

Celebrity Makeup: Kareena Kapoor (Again!)

One celebrity who rarely ever gets her makeup wrong in Kareena Kapoor and the best part about her looks are that they are never boring... She doesn't really stick to a particular kind of look and somehow whatever she does looks just so awesome on her... And this look was no different... It was spectacular, went really well with her gold sequined Atsu dress and my my did she look glamorous or what!

She went with a subtle black winged liner and pretty Red lips... My kind of makeup for sure!

Ok, I really need to give this to her... She has some very obvious arm-candy (read fat arms) but she embraces them... I should pick up a couple of pointers about loving your arm candy for sure ;)

Celebrity Makeup: Amrita Puri

My love for Red Lips and Bronzer is common knowledge now and anyone sporting a red lipstick becomes my instant favorite... However the shade of the lipstick on Amrita Puri below with the white blingey saree seems to be a bit off...

I love the saree separately and I totally love the makeup if I just see her neck up, so I inferred that the issue lies with the pairing of the saree with the particular makeup! Yup! I have always been good at analytical mathematics :P

The makeup alone would look awesome with a western black/royal blue/emerald green gown... With the saree in the picture, I would have gone for a brighter shade of red lippy... Maybe MAC Ruby Woo or Colorbar Velvet Matte Lipstick in Hot Hot Hot or even Lakme Absolute in Classic Rose.

Btw, I love the way she has her bronzer applied... She totally rocks it! :D

MakeUp For Office: Red Lipstick To Office? Why Not? :P

Poohkie asked me the other day if I wear Red Lipsticks to Office and well that gave me an idea that I could surely do a "Make-Up For Office" post with a Red Lippy :) Well as you can see I do wear Red lipsticks to office but as a stain.. So basically all I do is dab on some red lippy and then kiss into tissues for a couple of times and Voila! a stained Red Lip is ready for office :)

Here's the look :)

Here, I am wearing Lakme Absolute Matte Lipstick in Classic Rose
So, dare to wear Red?

READER QUERY: How to wear a Red Lipstick

Going ahead with the series of posts on red Lipsticks, I today have a query from Poohkie of Poohkie's Place about the right way of sporting a Red Lipstick. Of course I have tried to answer this to the best of my know-how and yes I did do a bit of internet research as well on it, but I am sure there are points that I couldn't think of, so I implore you all to do your bit and pitch in through the comments section :)

Also, let me clarify that I may not be an expert on Red Lippies and neither do I follow these "every time" I sport a Red lip but I am listing down pointers that I myself should ideally adhere to and find helpful :) Out of these you could make your own permutations and combinations according to what suits you best...

So here goes...
1. First and foremost is to have well exfoliated and moisturized lips before you apply a Red lippy.

2. Many of us have pigmented lips and even for those who have unpigmented lips. in order to bring out the true color of the lipstick, it is a good idea to apply foundation on your lips as a base. I do not recommend applying a concealer on the lips cause I have found it to be a bit drying.

3. Then comes the issue of "bleeding". In order for you to prevent bleeding of your Red lipstick, it is a good idea to fill in the lips with a lip liner. Not only does this help with "bleeding", but it also helps you shape your lips.

4. Now this step is something that I follow religiously even if I skip the first three and that is to apply the Red lippy n the inside of your lips/mouth as well. Cause nothing is as ugly as the fact that when you smile or laugh and the pale pink of  the inside of your mouth is visible in stark contrast to your Red lips.
Hate the "pale pink" visible in the inside of the mouth!
5. Keep your blush natural and as you all know keep the eye make-up light or to the minimum :) We don't want to end up looking like this now do we?

6. Sometimes, it happens that we are hopelessly in love with a particular shade of Red and it on application looks atrociously stark on us. In order to retain the tint of Red but not look stark what you can do is kiss into a tissue a couple of times. You will be amazed to see how that helps! :)

7. If you have thin lips like mine and you are applying a matte Red lippy, then I would suggest you to apply a bit of clear gloss only at the center of your lips. It gives an illusion of fuller lips :)

8. Another important point to bear in mind is that Red lips have a tendency to highlight your skin and complexion, which is why it is of utmost importance that you have your foundation, concealer and other base stuff in place. Red lips look best with a matte face. For ladies like me who prefer a "dewy" look could go for a matte foundation with a bit of highlighter in order to avoid the starkness of a matte face!

9. Also, try your best to go for a transfer proof Red lipstick in order to avoid it getting all over your teeth.
Paris Hilton with Red Lipstick all over her teeth!
10. Finally, the most important part and that is the tool to be used to apply a lippy. Red lipsticks are a tricky where the shape of your lips are concerned. Somehow even the most minor of errors get highlighted with a Red lipstick. Your lipstick going out of your natural lip line is something you want to avoid here. Hence, if you are confident enough to use the lipstick as is then go ahead! And for those of us who aren't very well versed with that, I would suggest using a lip brush for that precise application.
Hope this helps and yes all of you are welcome to share with us your little tricks that you follow for applying Red lipsticks :)

My Goto Red Lipsticks

A few days ago I had done a post on how I feel that Red Lipsticks were for everyone. For those who missed it could check it out here. I had mentioned there that I have been doing a lot of trials and experiments in order to zero-on on the perfect Red lipstick for me and in this post I have come up with the Reds that look most flattering on me. Do note that these Reds aren't of any particular tone/undertone and span over a variety of brands... So here goes...

(L-R): B&D is shade 145, Faces Satin Matte in Claret Red, MAC Matte Chili, Lakme Absolute Matte in Classic Rose, Colorbar Velvet Matte in Hot Hot Hot
Red Lipsticks

It is a delightful orange based Red lipstick with a tinge of Coral to it. It is one shade that suit Indian skintones that are on the fairer side. It is a bright neony Red and is quite an in the face color. It isn't for the weak hearted ;) and is sure guarantee attention to the wearer. SO wear it if you want to be the focus of the party ladies! :)

2. Faces Satin Matte Lipstick in Claret Red
This a deep blue toned Red and is very different from the previous lippy I spoke about. The shade reminds me of a dark rose type color and well this is one Red, which I feel will suit most Indian skintones. The shade has a sophisticated and a classy feel to it and should be essentially worn during the evenings/nights. The lipstick is not a "fun" Red but a "deep" and mysterious Red.

I would describe MAC Chili to be a brownish Red lipstick that is guaranteed to suit mostly medium skintones and hence is perfect for our Indian complexions :) It I guess isn't very popular cause it doesn't have many online reviews as compared to other MAC lippies. But ladies if you are looking for a no-fail Red lippy then this is the one for you :) You can check out my review for swatches and stuff if you like :) It is not a "siren" Red but another one of those sophisticated and an elegant Red :)

This shade is very close to MAC Chili, the difference being that it is less brown and more Orange. It is a fun counterpart of Chili and very very flattering to the skintone. It has the ability to make you look all glowy and flawless. It does magic I swear :) Though it is called "Classic Rose", it is in no way close to a rosy red shade. On the contrary it is more of an Orangish Red.

Now this is a true SIREN RED and when I say siren, I mean a true post box red with lots of punch and an unmistakable oomph factor :) It is matte, it doesn't transfer and well it is a true Red. If you can carry it off then woman the world is at your feet! :)

Which are your "GOTO" Red Lipsticks?

REVIEW & LOTD: Bharat & Dorris Lipstick No. 145

You know how much I love Red lipsticks and so to me it makes a lot of sense that whenever I go hauling to any make-up store, I pick a Red lippy for me randomly. Yes yes you too must try this out and share with me the feeling of exhilaration :P LOL... So anyways while hauling at Bharat & Dorris the other day, it made perfect sense for me to purchase a Red Lippy from there too. I got myself this shade numbered as 145. Here, let me pause my review and again complain about how inconvenient and difficult I find it is to remember and refer to make-up products by numbers rather than shade names. You see these beautiful and some of them downright gorgeous creatures made by God man deserve a lot of affection from us. Therefore they deserve names and not Roll numbers!

Now coming back to the review... Shade 145 is a gorgeous Red, which has a tiny hint of Coral in it. The shade is gorgeously bright and really in the face in a good way though ;) The image of the lipstick here shows the shade to be Orange but if you look at the swatch and my lip swatch, you can see the true color of the lippy...

The packaging of the lippy is a bit curious. It is in the shape of a tiny "missile" just like a MAC lippy. The finishing of the case is a rubbery velvetty kind, very similar to that of Sleek lipsticks but of a lower quality. The printing of "B&D Professional" also could have been better! From the outside it looks kind of cheap :( Once you open the cap of the lipstick, you feel that the whole apparatus from inside to be not so sturdy... No no not the stick but the whole contraption of the lip stick and the holder moves to and fro and that doesn't give a good quality feeling :(

The texture and the quality of the lipstick as such is really good. Its highly opaque, glides on like silk, no smell and no tingling sensation and stuff. My only complain is that it isn't transfer resistant and a Red lipstick that transfers color on whichever surface it touches (yes yes Pun intended) is a complete boo boo for me! :( I know you say that it's just for 350 bucks but really Colorbar Velvet Matte Lippies at 220/- have never given me the headache of stressing over me leaving lip marks on my cup rim especially during meetings. It's just plain tacky!

The staying power is decent and it does fade/transfer out to a lovely coral red stain, which actually looks gorgeous!

Bharat & Dorris Lipstick in Shade No. 145
LOTD:

Ooohhsss And Aaaahhsss!!
1. Gorgeous shade of Red.
2. Pocket Friendly
3. Does not have any odor
4. No reactions or irritations to my lips.
5. Glides on really smoothly
6. Does not dry my lips.

Ouches!
1. It is not transfer resistant. I keep leaving lip marks everywhere :(
2. The quality of the whole packaging should be improved. It looks cheap and tacky.
3. Availability is an issue. Bharat and Dorris products are available only in Mumbai and Pune.

Price
It costs INR 350/-

Repurchase?
No bright colors for me from this range :( But yeah the Cream Lipstick range of lipsticks from Bharat and Dorris seem to be of a better quality and has a yummy flavor too :) So I guess I'll try the other range :)

Would I Recommend?
Not really. I don't think I would recommend to anyone especially to Red Lipstick virgins!

Overall Rating
7.5/10

Red Lipsticks are for EVERYONE!

During my previous trip to Mumbai, my mom and I went out shopping to Palladium in the Phoenix Mills compound in Lower Parel, where we visited most importantly TBS and MAC, my most favorite stores in the world :) I had mentioned in my previous to previous haul post earlier that I had picked up a couple of stuff from MAC, one of which was "MAC Matte Lipstick in Chili". At the same time I picked out a Red Lippy for my mom as well (Ruby Woo), when my mom very vehemently refused saying that she will never be able to carry off a red lipstick. She was very adamant about no red lipsticks! That got me thinking and made me realize that a lot of women in India especially are not comfortable sporting a Red Lip. It could be something to do with the movie "Chameli" (for the present generation) and well some awkward and ancient ideas about the color Red for some. Very surprisingly though my mom and a lot many women of a similar age are comfortable with sporting maroon lipsticks! You think it could be something to do with Rekha? (Just a thought you know!)
Red Lipsticks
So anyways, this made me do a lot of Google searches and I realized a lot of women have made up their minds that either Red lipsticks do not suit them cause they are not porcelain fair or that they cannot find a perfect Red for themselves. Both claims I say is crap nonsense. Am I being too harsh here? No I beg to differ. I am not saying that these women are wrong, what I am saying is that they need to get out of their comfort zones or shells and explore for themselves what looks good on them and what does  not. Beauty blogs, make-up sites are all meant to give an opinion of a product or a particular trend but what looks good on you is upto you to decide! Isn't it ladies?

Again, let me clarify that I am not saying that I know best, rather I am also always trying out newer shades of Reds and trying to settle the matter of if a particular shade of red suits me or  not :P As you all know I love Red Lips and well I have gotten addicted to this trend. But this addiction of mine did not strike me overnight. It has been a long drawn process of reading reviews, trying out new shades and of course researching on the internet. And ladies today I would like to share with you all the results of my this research :P and indulge those of you who haven't as yet dared ro wear Red :) In the process I might step on a few feet, do forgive me and if you want we could take the discussion offline (this is what my lecturers used to say in college when they weren't sure of a particular debate's outcome :P)

So lets get started :)

1. The first thing I had done when I decided I wanted to wear a Red lip was google search "Red lipsticks for Indian Skintone". And what did that give me? It gave me site after site lengthy discussions on how blue based reds would suit someone with a cooler undertone and yellow based red would suit someone with warmer undertones. Well Ok! I am sure they know what they are talking about but ladies really practically speaking I am still not sure about my undertone being cool/warm. What if I say mine undertone is HOT? :P Ok kidding! But seriously? We Indians in general have all warm undertones (there are exceptions) but does that mean we cannot wear blue based Reds? That doesn't seem fair now does it? So I decided to give it a shot and I got myself my first Red Lipstick which was Colorbar Velvet Matte Lipstick in Hot Hot Hot. It's a typical Red and I am guessing that it is blue based. When I wore it, I tweaked it here and there and all that jazz and decided that it suited me when I wore it and then lightly kissed onto a tissue. The same held true for Colorbar Velvet Matte in Brick-O-La.
Next I got myself a Lakme Absolute Matte Lipstick in Classic Rose. Well that sure is a yellow/orange based Red and that suited me as is i.e. without kissing into a tissue. So basically I just proved to myself that I can carry off a blue as well as yellow based Red! So that means I am neither cool nor warm. So what am I? When I asked this to my guy, he said I am yellow! Well accepted :P
MORAL: The moral of this really long monologue ladies is that when trying out a Red lipstick, you need not stress on undertones and stuff, stress on the finish of the lippy and voila you will get your HG lipstick! In general, Indian women due to their warn undertones do suit orange/yellow based Red lipsticks more but one can confidently sport a blue based Red as well if it is of a matte finish (ensure this by doing the kiss the tissue trick :P)

2. Another sure shot way of knowing which shade of Red and what finish will suit you most is by retrospecting and by honestly remembering as to which Red Lipped celebrity made the Red Lip syndrome trigger inside us. Lets be honest now... 90-95% of us get our make-up inspirations from celebs or at least someone we saw somewhere. So all you need to do is picture the kind of Red Lips the said celeb/person was wearing and almost 80% of the times you can be sure that the same shade of Red in the same texture will suit you.
I for example was bowled over by Cameron Diaz in "The Mask". The Red lips that she sported were totally "SMOKEY" and that triggered the urge of Red Lips in me. She wore a yellow based red in a matte finish and sure the same shade and texture syits me as well :) (At least thats what Iliek to think :P)...
MORAL: We generally like a look on a celeb or anyone for that matter, which we know would suit us as well :) We will never like a particular look if we subconsciously believe that it wont look good on us :) It's plain psycology! ;)

3. The last and the most important point that needs to be covered when wearing a Red Lippy for the first time is to muster up courage for a public appearance. I am sure many of us had initially worn Red lipsticks pouted in the mirror but then removed it the moment we stepped out of the bathroom or the dressing room right? So how to get the confidence to wear a Red lipstick in a room full of people who may or may not know the glamor quotient of a Red Lip? What did I do? *ahem* I wore a Red lipstcik for the first time when I went out for a dinner date with my guy. The keywords here being "dinner" and "my guy only". Now you'll tell me that not all guys like Red Lipstick and that's where ladies you are all wrong! To be honest my guy has always maintained that he hates Red lips (even now), but when shown Cameron Diaz in The Mask, he did not even notice the Red lips, all he said was this is the best she has ever looked! I rest my case :P So anyways when I did wear my yellow based Red lippy for the dinner date (after Cameron Diaz sighting), he was too happy to see me in a similar lippy. And when finally heads did turn int he restaurant (now come on you all know Red Lips are a show stopper), he officially loved my Red lipstick ;)
Now that the first appearance was taken care off, I wore a Red Lip next for an outing where I knew only our closest friends would be present. Without much explanatin there, that outing was a success. And ladies that was enough for me and I was armed with a lifetime supply of confidence to spot a Red Lip :)
MORAL: Start out gradually and then when ready take on the world :)

I don't know if any of the three points above would help you get into a Red Lipstick mode but ladies always keep in mind that a Red Lipstick is the only product that has the power to glam you up on its own! It needs no assistance from any other product :)
